Fire destroys Colville Tribe's administration building | News
An early morning fire Monday destroyed the administration building for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation located in Nespelem.
“Big decision making was done in this building,” said Chairman of the Governing Business Council, Michael Finely, adding that the tribe has lost a place of great legacy. The tribe says that the three story building is a total loss.
Finely isn't sure how much information was lost in the fire, most of the tribal records have been converted to databases or are housed in a separate archive building. Finely said they were planning on building a new administrative building in the future, but they weren't ready for that rebuilding to begin now.
The administrative building has housed the Governing Business Council, informally referred to as the tribal council, since 1975. The cause of the fire is not yet known and it is under investigation.
