Body found of man charged with sex crimes

A Gonzaga University maintenance worker facing charges of rape and child molestation has been found dead in his car north of Spokane.

This child rape investigation came to an abrupt end when 48-year-old Timothy D. Woodard was found dead in his car near Dunn Mountain Way in Addy. The Stevens County Coroner's office says Woodard committed suicide.

Autopsy results released Thursday indicate carbon monoxide is the cause of death.

Woodard failed to appear before Superior Court Judge James Triplet on Tuesday, prompting a $100,000 warrant for his arrest. He faced seven felony counts for sex crimes that started in 1998 and ended in 2010. The charges included first-degree rape and first-degree child molestation.

Police say Woodard was molesting the son of his wife's friend for more than a decade.

Woodard was a former employee of Burgan's Furniture and most recently worked at Gonzaga University as a maintenance worker.

Robbery closes West Bonner Food Bank

Robbery closes West Bonner Food Bank

West Bonner County Food Bank and Thrift had to close its doors on Thursday to repair the damage done during a break in.

Karen Squires, the food bank chair, found the door to the food kicked in and the cash register smashed open on Thursday morning. Squires said that they had to keep the store closed because the sheriff's office wasn't able to come to the scene right away due to a couple of accidents in the area.

The door frame and hardware on the door was smashed and broken and it took most of the day to repair. After smashing the cash register and only finding change, the thief found the cash box and made off with what Squires estimates to have been about $80.

Luckily, Squires reported that the food and thrift store items didn't appear to be taken at all. About 50 people in the community were not able to pick up the food baskets that normally would have been distributed that morning.

Three boaters rescued from Pend Oreille River

Three boaters rescued from Pend Oreille River

Three boaters were rescued on Sunday morning after their canoe capsized on the Pend Oreille River sending the young adults into the water. They were all wearing life jackets.

Nicholas Geoppo, 18, and Alexandra Wert, 18, were canoeing the river along with 17 year old passenger. The three had just gone over the falls, North of Metaline, when they were thrown from their aluminum canoe. This portion of the river can be extremely dangerous due to high water levels and narrow canyon walls.

Rescue crews from the Pend Oreille County Sheriff's office, Boundary Dam, the Public Utility District and the U.S. Boarder Patrol responded to the area. The boaters were able to pull themselves out of the water and rescue crews found them and took them for medical attention.

Geoppo was treated for mild hypothermia and released. The other two boaters declined medical attention and were released from the scene. The sheriff's office says that their life jackets were a major factor in the success of the rescue.
