Local Dentist Helping Kids in West Africa

A local dentist is helping kids smile half a world away. Dr. Doug Daehlin is one of dozens of dentists volunteering his time on board Mercy Ships, docked in West Africa. He practices dentistry in Loon Lake.

According to Mercy Ships, the organizations uses uses hospital ships to deliver free health care services to people living in third world countries.

“While there are lots of opportunities to be a volunteer dentist around the world, I was immediately drawn to Mercy Ships," said Dr. Daehlin. "During my volunteer service, I will work side-by-side with dental colleagues from other parts of the U.S. and around the world. Our collaboration and exchange is an invaluable experience."

According to the World Health Organization, there is a great need for dental care in West Africa. In Togo alone there are only 19 dentists, less than one dentist for every 10,000 people. According to WHO, there are 16 dentists per 10,000 people in the United States.
