Red Flag Warning issued for Spokane and Stevens County for majority of afternoon and evening

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Spokane and Stevens County. The highest threat according to the National Weather Service is south of Fruitland to Deer Park.

Dry and breezy conditions will affect other parts of Eastern Washington and North Idaho. From late morning until late evening, sustained winds from 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph are expected in the area. Drought conditions with low humidity and high winds are ideal for wildland fire ignition and propagation. Fires could spread quickly with dry vegetation as fuel.

Updated - 2:26 p.m. - The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved amendments to cougar hunting regulations that would increase cougar hunting opportunities without the aid of dogs in six different counties. The approval was made today during a conference call just days after their Wolf Conservation and Management Plan special meeting.

Puppy found in Stevens County makes its way for medical treatment in Nelson, B.C.

Nearly two years ago, a puppy originally called Thumper was found at Jumpoff Joe Lake off of Highway 395 south of Chewelah, with a broken foot and lowered immune system. He was found by a young couple who took him to the Colville Pet Refuge where he was treated. An increase in pets at the Refuge transferred him to Nelson, B.C.

Commisioner of Public Lands to visit operational biomass-to-energy facility in Springdale

Last year, the Springdale Lumber Mill for the first time in five years, became operational again with the help of Borgford Bioenergy, a Colville-based company. 34 jobs were created for the re-opening of the mill as a biomass-to-energy production facility.

Legislation was passed in 2010 to allow biomass pilot projects to allow the production of energy in ecological and sustainable ways.

Washington Traffic Safety Commission releases results for recent speed enforcement patrols

Most participants correctly answered questions asked in a recent survey by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. The survey was available online during a recent speed enforcement patrol between July 15th and August 7th.

Kate Carlsen, the Commission's media relations consultant, 528 people participated in the online survey regarding speeding drivers.

Friedlund Arraigned In Stevens County Courthouse

John Friedlund was arraigned in the Stevens County Courthouse and was charged with four counts of theft of the 1st degree and five counts of theft of the 2nd degree.

He was arrested for criminal mistreatment of 106-year-old Kettle Falls woman Francis Swan, who was in his care.

Friedlund is accused of stealing $13,000 from her.

Court documents say Freidlund was not feeding Swan and keeping her in a house filled with trash and feces.
